At twelve years of age Ira ran away from home (and a wicked step-mother).He washed dishes on ships in the New York harbor to earn money. Hecontinued working on the ships until he was "Drafted" to fight in theCivil War. His feet froze during the war and he lost his toes. He alwayswore soft shoes as a result. Due to his injuries, he received a pensionof $75.00 each month. He was a Mason for 57 years. His funeral was heldat the Tipton Chapel by Rev. C.E. Mille. He and Wineford are buried inthe Indian Creek Cemetery in Cooke Co. Tx.

IRA STEVENS, 92, DIES AT HOME OF HIS DAUGHTER Had Been Mason For 57Years and Resident Of County 50 Years. Funeral services for Ira Stevens,92, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Annie Mann near BurnsCity, Saturday morning at 9:57 o'clock, were held at Tipton Chapel Sundayafternoon. Rev. C.E. Miller officiating, with burial in the Indian Creekcemetery, where Masonic services were held.
Mr. Stevens, a residen of Cooke county for 50 years, is survived byhis wife, Mrs. Winifred Stevens, 92; three children, Mrs. Annie Mann,C.B. and John Stevens. 13 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Nineof his 10 grandsons were pallbearers for the funeral, and hisgranddaughters, Mmes. Arthur Steele and Earl Faulkner, were flowerbearers. Mr. Stevens was born in Ulcher county, New York, in 1843, andcame to Cooke county 52 years ago and bought a farm wehre he lived untiltwo years ago when he bought a home in Pilot Point. He had moved back toCooke county to live with his daughter only a month ago. He had been ingood health and was active until three days before his death.
He had been a member of the Masonic lodge for 57 years and amember of the church for 43 years.
