Della Naomi Pore, younest daughter of Leander and Mary Pender Pore, wasborn in Cherokee Indian Territory in the area of what is nowBartlesville, Oklahoma, on November 30, 1893. At the age of seven, thefamily moved to a farm just northwest of Luka, Ks. At the age of 18 shemarried Albert Bernard Mott, her childhood sweetheart, on February 6,1912. Bert Mott had filed claim to a homestead in Stanton County, Ks.They were married in Greensburg and made the trip to Stanton County in acovered wagon, cooking over campfires along the way. He filed additionalclaims and bought more acreage, obtaining a sizeable ranch, Bert liked totry everything. They had a large garden which they irrigated with waterpumped by seven windmills. They raised wheat, horses, cattle and sheep.Bert purched the first combine in Stanton County and was away for weeksat a time harvesting in central Kansas. It was one of Della's jobs to oilthe windmills when it became necessary. Eight children were born to Dellaand Bert. Only the first was born with benefit of a doctor, the rest bornin the home that Bert had built , sometimes with the help of a neighborwoman. There were no modern conveniences, such as a telephone orelectricity and Della did all washing on a washboard, cooked for hiredhelp on a wood burning stove, and all the vegetables and fruit came fromthe garden and orchard. The elder first attended school in a one roomschoolhouse. With the event of the dust bowl era, they were forced toleave their home in western Kansas and moved to Barber county, buying theformer Shermer ranch five miles north of Medicine Lodge. Mrs. Mott wasactive in the Amber Club, Pleasant Hill Extension Club, the GleanersSunday School class in the Christian Church. She liked to quilt and wonmany blue ribbons with her beautiful quilts. family events told by Della Pore Mott:
My grandmother Della Pore Mott told me that when she was living on theOsage Indian Reservation (now Oklahoma). The Dalton Brothers Gang livedclosed by, and one day they came to her house while being chased by aposse asked if they could hide in their barn. Her mother Mary FrancesPender Pore told them no, and they left and escaped in a field near by.Also they when they got tired of eating cornbread, my grandfather AlbertMott had a grist mill he used to ground maize to make some bread . Itmade a soft tasty bread to eat instead of the cornbread. Since whiteflour was too expensive to make bread all the time.
