'A Century of Light' by D.L. Vest History of Brahan Lodge No. 226 in LaVernia
Texas: p.26: "Another heroic figure in the early histroy of the section and
of Brahan Lodge was James J. Humphries who participated in the ill-advised
Texan invasion of Mexico in 1842, was captured tragically at Mier, and was
imprisoned at Perote Castle. This invading force was led by a group of
stubborn but magnificent hot heads; among them were Ewin Cameron, William
Eastland, Ben McColluch and Thomas J. Green. When the difficulty and sheer
foolishness of invading Mexico in such small numbers and with a line of
communications stretched to he breaking point became apparent, these leaders
and their followers refused to give up and were defeated and captured by the
Mexicans. After the prisoners had suffered innumerable mishaps in prison and
an heroic attempt to escape had failed, President Santa Anna of Mexico ordered
that every tenth man should be shot. One hundred and fifty-nine white beans
and seventeen black beans were placed in a clay jar and the Mi\er prisoners
drew beans in a lottery in which each man understood fully that death awaited
each who drew a black bean. James Humphries was fortunate enough to draw a
white bean,k but seventeen of his comrades including the courageous William
Eastland were executed. The remaining captives including Humphries, were kept
in prison at Perote until the last of them were released on Santa Anna's
birthday, September 16 1844. This release according to John Henry Brown, was
granted at the request of Santa Anna's wife." This source references 'The
History of Texas, Vol. II, p. 252' by John Henry Brown, and 'The Prisoners of
Perote' by Chabot.
