[67] 1850, 1860 Census Lafayette MI
Heritage of Lafayette Co MI - LDS 976.283 F302 - Joe joined the Mississippi
MIlitia in 1864. He later became a scout for J. C. Forts under the command of
Gen. Forest. Joe attended Oxford School, the moved with his family to Kansas
where he and his father bought cattle. In 1879 Joe married Sally Jane
Humphreys in Lavernia, Texas. Their honeymoon was a cattle drive with 24
cowboys headed for Buffalo Gap, Texas. Joe was hit by a train in 1938 and
died.
Joe Humphreys pension application: from Family Ties Vol 2. LDS 976.283D2f p93:
"Marfa TX 5-23-31 I made application for confederate pension last year. In a
polite refusal you told me why you could not grant it. With my application I
sent a letter of explanation. You are not supposed to remember contents of
all the letters you receive so I will repeat hoping will reconsider the case.
Served with state troops of Miss during summer of 1864 at Grinado Drilling.
The Gov told us that if all the boys would agree to enlist we would be sent
home. All of us agreed and was booked to go with others to Forests cavalry
but when parties left I was in bed sick. When I got well I went to Capt Forts
Co. of scouts and wrote you it was an independent Co. That is the point I
wish you to reconsider. When Gen Grant was at Oxford Miss in winter of 62 Gen
Forests raided his rear at Holly Springs and forced him to withdraw his army
from there on to end of that cruel war there was a big neutral country in
North Miss and west Tenn subject to raids from both sides. It was into this
country that Gen Forest sent Capt. Fort with a few men and never recalled him
until Gen Lee surrendered. Then he ordered us to report at Tupelo Miss. We
went at once not kn9wing why we were ordered there. On arriving there we
received orders to surrender. Nobody there for us to surrender to. Capt. urged
us all to go with him back to Memphis Tenn and surrender to Commander there.
I think his name was Washburn - Instead I went direct to home at Oxford Miss
which was much nearer Memphis. All who went to Memphis with Capt. Fort were
paroled and sent home. Capt was not afraid to surrender because he had quite
a list of prisoners he had captured and had never allowed one of them abused.
All of ou co. knew that we were subject to Gen Forest orders. Keep out small
raiding parties and look after any troublesome negroes - Nearly all the
negroes were still at there old homes. Nono but old men and boys were left in
that country then and if the negroes had been so disposed they could have made
a lot of trouble. Be it said to their credit that our company never had any
trouble at all with the droves of negroes still on the farms within hearing of
teh morning and evening guns of the Yanks as we then called them.
We drew ammunition from Gen Gorest. We drew no pay- could not have bought any
thing with it if we had confed money was no good in that neutral country.
Capt Fort made a big reputation by surprising the other side and winning out.
One time while I was with him the other side turned the trick on him and what
happened then proved what kind of a reputation he had. We had been riding
most of teh night and stoped in a secluded place to rest but with out scouts -
But a co of the 8th Ill Calvary avoided our pickets and were near by firing
and coming in a run first notice we had I remember when firing began I was on
top a big log - out of the mud - sound asleep. We held to ground and made
several miles chase. We had but one killed. Capt. Re'cvd a slight flesh wound.
The Company of 8th Ill had a Dr. with them and instead of retreating with
his Co he dismounted and went to work on his wounded men. We passed back near
him but he never even stopped work.
There was one hero who carried no gun. Suggens then had not learned that an
intestinal wound was curable and could never forget passing near - as we went
back - Lt shot through intestines - on all fours trying to vomit. Dr. was not
trying to do anything for him. Am sending you several affidavits which I hope
you will count as proof that I have made no false statements.
Mrs. Andrews' husband was my comrade in Capt. Forts Co I remanin yours most
Rept - Joe Humphreys - whether you grant my pension or not"
